If you’re a first-timer, here are a few of our favorite things to do on Okaloosa Island in Fort Walton Beach, no matter what time of year you plan to visit!

Catch Some Rays at the Beach

The best part of any beach vacation is the beach, and Okaloosa Island makes it easy to soak up the sun. With soft, powdery sand, clear blue skies, and crystal clear water, you’ll feel like you’ve found your own slice of paradise. Spend your days building epic sandcastles, chasing waves on a boogie board, or simply stretching out with a good book—either way, the beach is the ultimate playground. Don’t forget sunset strolls because nothing says ‘vacation goals’ like golden skies reflecting on turquoise waves.

And no worries when trying to find your spot in the sun, as you’ll find multiple beach access points on Okaloosa Island, including The Boardwalk, John Beasley Park, and seven different access points on Santa Rosa Boulevard!

Visit the Gulfarium

Treat the kids to an afternoon at the Gulfarium Marine and Adventure Park. This beloved Okaloosa Island attraction gets you up close to playful dolphins, curious sea lions, and other incredible marine life native to the Emerald Coast. The hands-on exhibits and interactive shows keep everyone entertained, while the park’s commitment to preserving and protecting local marine life shines through every experience.

Hit the Boardwalk

While you’ll find plenty of parking if your only goal is to hit the beach at The Boardwalk, that’s not the only entertainment. Filled with beachfront shops and restaurants, The Boardwalk is the perfect place to kick back, grab a bite, shop for souvenirs, or catch a breathtaking sunset. Best of all, attire is casual, so you can come straight from the beach before making the rounds!

Fish on the Okaloosa Island Pier

The Okaloosa Island Pier, located between the Gulfarium and The Boardwalk, extends a quarter of a mile into the Gulf of Mexico. Take a stroll and see what fishermen are reeling in; bring your own gear or rent it on-site. Even if you’re not interested in fishing, it’s a great place to catch a sunset, and you’ll more than likely see a dolphin or two!

Explore a Museum

Learn about the local history at the Indian Temple Mound Museum. This fascinating museum offers a journey through Native American culture, European exploration, and pirate lore (very popular with the littles!) With over 1,000 artifacts, there’s something to spark curiosity in every visitor.

Dine Out

Part of the fun of any vacation is sampling the local flavors, and Okaloosa Island doesn’t disappoint. With a variety of fantastic restaurants, many just a short stroll away, you can enjoy everything from freshly caught Gulf seafood to burgers and pizza. Whether you’re craving a dining experience in an upscale eatery or a laid-back meal with your toes in the sand, the island’s dining spots serve delicious dishes and even better vibes!

Start your day with a hearty meal at Beachview Breakfast and Grill or Asiago’s Skillet, where the coffee is hot and the portions are generous. You can’t go wrong with local favorites like AJ’s Oyster Shanty, Stewby’s Seafood Shanty, or the always-popular Old Bay Steamer for fresh seafood. Craving pizza? Head to Bucettis Beach Pizza or FUBAR Pizza Bar for the perfect slice and incredible views. Wherever you choose, a delicious meal is never far away!

Check Out Downtown Fort Walton Beach

While the beach may entice you to lounge on a float for hours on end, don’t forget there’s a thriving community minutes away. Downtown Fort Walton Beach, just over the Brooks Bridge, is filled with quaint shops and boutiques, and you’ll also find coffee shops and cafes offering a lovely reprieve from the beach. Stroll along the bustling storefronts on Highway 98, or opt for the shaded, tree-lined Brooks Street around the back for a more serene experience. The kids can play on the playground at The Landing, a quiet park overlooking the Santa Rosa Sound, while you enjoy the incredible views. Any time spent in this delightful community is a nice change of pace and a fun way to soak in the area’s charm.
