Why Visit Destin in Winter?

Winter in Destin means sunshine, savings, and space to relax!

Known as “The World’s Luckiest Fishing Village,” Destin has become a world-renowned beach destination with white-sand beaches, emerald waters, and friendly locals. While summer is peak season, locals know the winter months are one of the best times to visit Destin. We enjoy walking on the beach, golfing, and exploring local state parks.

Unique seasonal events, like the Destin boat parade, special concerts, and holiday markets, bring the community to life. Winter is also when we tend to shop at the Destin Commons and hit the Gulfarium, because with fewer crowds, there’s more space to linger, browse, and enjoy it all!

What’s the Weather Like in Destin During Winter?

Expect highs in the mid-60s, plenty of sunshine, and no winter blues.

Bid farewell to gray skies and icy temps. With over 200 sunny days per year, Destin’s winter weather is perfect for morning walks on the beach or afternoons spent exploring outdoors. And, for snowbirds escaping a colder climate, you’ll appreciate how rejuvenating the Gulf feels this time of year.

Is Destin Less Crowded in the Winter?

Yes! And fewer crowds mean quieter beaches, shorter restaurant lines, and a more relaxed pace—all while saving money on flights and lodging!

Destin’s population surges in summer, but in winter, you can enjoy the same stunning beaches without the crowds. You’ll also find better deals on vacation rentals, easier parking, and open tables at your favorite restaurants!

What Winter Holiday Events Happen in Destin?

From boat parades to fireworks, Destin transforms into a festive wonderland packed with holiday cheer and family fun. We love putting on an extra layer, heading out, and enjoying the sights and sounds of the season. We hope you’ll join us at a few of our favorite winter events:

  • Events at The Village of Baytowne Wharf: Features a nightly light show, visits with Santa, ice skating, and a special holiday edition of the Wednesday night concert series.
  • Events at Destin Harborwalk Village: Includes Mistletoe Markets, orchestra performances, a festive holiday boat parade, and more.
  • Baytowne’s New Year’s Eve Countdown: Family-friendly events include an early fireworks display, face painting, and more. Adults can stick around, raise a glass, and toast in the New Year during the spectacular midnight fireworks show.
  • The Sandestin Gumbo Festival: From rich and savory seafood gumbo to hearty chicken and sausage stews, you’ll find the perfect blend of flavors to chase away any winter chill as chefs compete for the “Best Gumbo on the Emerald Coast.”
  • Best Bloody Mary on the Beach: Enter your own recipe for a chance to win or just spend the day sampling the flavors of local restaurants. Whether sharing or sipping, this is an event you don’t want to miss!

What are the Best Outdoor Winter Activities in Destin?

Winter weather in Destin is perfect for outdoor activities. We particularly enjoy golfing, hiking, biking, and paddleboarding—it’s peaceful, sunny, and the perfect way to enjoy everything right here in our own backyard. Here are some of our favorite places to get out and explore:

  • Hiking: With five state parks to explore, each offering different views and wildlife, you’ll definitely want to hit a few while here.
  • Biking: Hop on the Timpoochee Trail, a 26-mile trail coursing along the Gulf through the beautiful and distinct communities of 30A. (Make a pitstop in Rosemary Beach and hit the farmer’s market, open on Sundays year-round from 9 AM-1 PM!)
  • Golfing: With multiple golf courses throughout the area, there’s one for every level of play and ability. Plus, you can practice your game in unbelievable surroundings.
  • Paddleboarding: With lakes, bayous, bays, and coastal dune lakes, you’re bound to find a serene setting for an afternoon spent exploring. (We’re particularly fond of Eastern Lake in Seagrove Beach, which is great for beginners!)

Crab Island is just as beautiful in the winter, and you can even discover some new adventures without the long waits. Whether you’re hiking local trails or cruising the Choctawhatchee Bay, you’ll have more space and plenty of sunshine to enjoy it all!
